The International Association of Laryngectomees (IAL) Voice Institute offers a premier, intensive training course in state-of-the-art methods of alaryngeal speech restoration for speech-language pathologists and graduate speech-language pathology students (ST's). The comprehensive program also covers related topics such as stoma hygiene, counseling, respiratory function, and dysphagia.  Emphasis is placed upon the importance of multidisciplinary care for individuals who have undergone surgical removal of the larynx, usually as a result of laryngeal cancer. Through lectures, video demonstrations, observations, hands-on activities and supervised patient interactions, participants are provided with opportunities to develop clinical knowledge and skills in all methods of alaryngeal speech restoration. Instruction in tracheoesophageal speech methodology is designed to meet the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) competency guidelines for practice in this specialty area [1].

Laryngectomees who have acquired excellent communication skills and are seeking information to be better resources for their peers are eligible to attend the training program as Laryngectomee Trainees (LT's). The Voice Institute runs concurrently with the IAL Annual Meeting, combining further learning with social interaction in a relaxed setting. Upon completion of the five-day course, ST and LT trainees may choose to complete the comprehensive examination toward registry in the IAL Directory of Instructors of Alaryngeal Speech. Other health professionals with an interest in rehabilitation following laryngectomy are welcome to attend as observers.

Laryngectomees who wish to develop or enhance their communication skills attend the program as Voice Institute Pupils (VIP's), and receive personalized instruction under the direction of certified speech-language pathology faculty and staff. Assistance is provided to individuals who use the artificial larynx, esophageal speech, and tracheoesophageal speech, in conjunction with appropriate medical oversight. The faculty includes nationally and internationally acclaimed experts in alaryngeal speech who are dedicated to providing a comprehensive learning experience.

Course Objectives:
